More than 120 students from across The Two Counties Trust came together for the Trust’s first-ever Student Conference, spending the day at the University of Derby to explore future pathways, broaden their horizons and discover what’s possible beyond the classroom.
Hosted at the University of Derby’s state-of-the-art Cavendish Building, the conference immersed students in university life from the moment they arrived. As well as taking part in workshops and keynote sessions, students experienced lecture theatres and teaching spaces, met current university students and gained a first-hand insight into higher education.
The event opened with a keynote address from former Government Minister and former Derby North MP, Amanda Solloway, who shared her own experiences and encouraged students to believe in their potential.
“It was a privilege to be invited to deliver the keynote speech to so many inspiring young people. I wanted them to leave knowing that where you start in life does not determine where you can end up.”
“Your circumstances do not have to define your future. We all face challenges, but it’s vital not to let self-doubt be the thing that stops you achieving your goals. If someone else beats you, that’s one thing. But don’t be beaten by yourself.”
Students then joined peers from across the Trust in mixed year-group groups, creating new bonds while taking part in a carousel of interactive workshops designed to build confidence, develop aspirations and encourage them to think about their futures.
Delivered in partnership with the University of Derby, sessions introduced students to university life, business and law, offering practical insight into higher education and future careers. A further workshop, Choices, led by Executive Headteacher Derek Hobbs, encouraged students to reflect on the difficult decisions faced by influential historical figures, inspiring them to recognise their own ability to make brave choices and create positive change.
Students also heard from Professor Chris Sansom, whose keynote showcased the university’s pioneering research into zero carbon technologies. Covering topics including renewable energy, sustainable buildings and environmental innovation, the session highlighted world-leading research taking place on their doorstep and encouraged students to consider how they could contribute to solving some of society’s biggest challenges.
The conference concluded with a keynote from The Two Counties Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, Wesley Davies, who reflected on the Trust’s values, the importance of character and what it means to be part of the Two Counties community.
