GCSE Performing Arts students at Selston High School were recently treated to an inspiring visit from West End and UK touring star Joe Sleight.
Joe is currently performing as Eddie, one of the titular brothers, in the touring production of Blood Brothers. As this is a core text within the GCSE Performing Arts curriculum, students benefited from meeting an industry professional with a deep understanding of both the artistic and theoretical aspects of the play.
A graduate of the Guildford School of Acting, Joe has built an impressive career, appearing in a range of productions including Romeo and Juliet and the West End version of Wicked, where he performed as the understudy for Boq. His visit gave students a rare opportunity to learn directly from a professional actor whose passion for the arts was reflected in students.
During his workshop, Joe guided students through the process of transforming a script into a compelling performance, exploring characterisation, stage presence and emotional truth. Students also engaged in a lively Q&A, where Joe offered honest advice about training, auditions and building a sustainable career in the performing arts.
Experiences like this form an important part of Selston’s high-value curriculum and reflect the The Two Counties Trust’s commitment to broadening students’ cultural capital. By connecting classroom learning with real-world expertise, students are encouraged to see how their studies open doors to exciting and creative pathways. Across the Trust, schools champion similar opportunities that bring learning to life, from author visits and theatre workshops to talks with playwrights and producers. Each experience deepens students’ understanding of their subjects and inspires them to aim high in their chosen fields.
Selston’s GCSE students left the session motivated and enriched by Joe’s visit, with many already exploring new ideas for their upcoming performances. The school and Trust would like to thank Joe for generously sharing his time, knowledge and passion for the arts, and for making a lasting impact on our students’ learning.
